Description: Quickstep Technologies and Structured Design developed a design concept for a structural capability upgrade to the Gemini telescopes in Chile on behalf of the Anglo-Australian Observatory.
This new top-end structure for the 8m diameter telescopes allows a 4000kg instrumentation package to be held in position with negligible (less than 1mm) deviation from the design location during the full range of movement whilst making observations. This structural stiffness is not feasible with the existing metal structure and represents a substantial improvement in data gathering performance.
