Project: "JANDU" airframe and engine design
Description: Structured Design and Thomson Design designed an airframe to meet the challenging requirements for a turbo-fan powered UAV capable of cruising at 250kts (460kph) for 4 hours with a 50kg payload. This involved not only designing an airframe and systems but also in adapting an existing micro-turbojet engine to add a power turbine and ultra-high bypass ratio fan. This project used a combination of classical aerodynamic analysis techniques for both the fan and vehicle and also a significant amount of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to determine performance and optimise the design. This programme is funded by DSTO as a demonstrator for the technologies developed.
